This morning I woke up to a very pleasant surprise, a bunch of Coco's cast and plot details were revealed Via Lee Unkrich Twitter, Entertainment Weekly, & Variety. Miguel with his grandmother, Mama Coco Miguel, the protagonist of the film, will be voiced by Anthony Gonzalez. The 12 year old newcomer was discovered after a world wide search for a Mexican actor to helm the role. Gael Garcia Bernal plays a trickster skeleton named Hector. On Miguels grand adventure, Hector decides to stick by his side & help Miguel through thick and thin. Playing the role of Miguels idol (Ernesto de la Cruz), is Benjamin Bratt. He was the first known cast member of this film but until this morning his part was unknown. Alongside that cast & character information we got some new plot details! Coco tells the story of a young boy named Miguel who has a passion for music. Unfortunately, the rest of his family (who own a long running shoe business) has a hatred for music. Many years ago Miguel's grand father abandoned his grand mother to persue a career in performing, leading her to declare that music is dead to the family. But Miguel can't harvest the desire to play music, so he goes out to find his idol, Ernesto de la Cruz. He is known for his awesome skull guitar. On the eve of Día de Muertos, Miguel breaks into Ernesto de la Cruz’s house in order to borrow the skull guitar, so he can enter in a talent show and prove to his family that music is in fact good. Here comes a plot twist... as soon as Miguel touches the guitar he is suddenly in the Land of the Dead—a dazzily and vibrant land ruled by everything dead. Once in the Land of the Dead, Miguel teams up with a skeleton named Hector to help hunt down Ernesto de la Cruz, hoping to find a way to break the curse & return to the Land of the Living. Miguel soon discovers that his ancestors are near, so he must find them and earn their blessing to perform. Gael Garcia Bernal recoring lines for Coco Wow, that was a lot of new information! So we can assume that this will be Pixar's first musical? We wrote an article theorizing about this topic a few days ago so make sure you check that out.
